Turning 26

Coming off a parent's plan at 26, without a gap.

Plans that cover dependents must keep children on until 26. The date your coverage actually ends, and your window to enroll in your own plan, depend on the type of plan your parent has.

Common questions

Know what to expect.

General education only. Exact options require an individual review.

Should I pick COBRA or a Marketplace plan?

Compare total cost and networks. COBRA keeps the same plan but you usually pay the full premium; a Marketplace plan may qualify for a tax credit based on your own income.

Can I start shopping before my birthday?

Yes. The Special Enrollment window opens 60 days before your coverage ends, so you can line up a plan with no gap.

Does my income matter?

Yes. Marketplace financial help is based on your expected household income for the year.
