Four details that shape a North Carolina coverage review.

01

ZIP code and timing

Your North Carolina ZIP code and desired effective date determine where the search should begin. A move, loss of coverage, or other life event may also affect timing.

02

Doctors and prescriptions

Prepare the providers, facilities, pharmacies, and prescriptions that matter. Verify each one against current information for the exact option.

03

Premium and total exposure

Compare the monthly premium together with the deductible, copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket limit, exclusions, and network rules.

04

Marketplace and other paths

Depending on your situation, the conversation may include Marketplace coverage and other available paths. No category is automatically right for everyone.

What is changing for 2027

  • Starting January 1, 2027, many NC Medicaid adults ages 19 to 64 must work, study or volunteer 80 hours a month, or earn at least $580 a month, unless exempt. Adults in this group will also renew every 6 months.
  • If you lose Medicaid, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period for a Marketplace plan within 90 days.
  • The enhanced premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025. For 2026 and later, the original ACA rules apply: help is generally available for household income from 100% to 400% of the federal poverty level, and there is no cap on repaying excess advance credits.
